Our Mission: To protect access to and enhance an individual’s experience of a float trip through the Grand Canyon while protecting the resource
Who we are:
We are a non-profit 503(c)3 organization established in 1996 governed by a Board of Directors and a set of Bylaws. Board members are volunteers who are DIY boaters, care about access to the Canyon and cherish the resource it provides. You can meet them here. There are no paid staff. Managing all the facets of running an organization is kind of a bootstrap affair – akin to doing a self-guided trip. And, of course, we too have a privacy policy.
We are supported by our members who keep the organization alive. Help us by joining or renewing your membership. Thanks!
What we do:
Monitor the usage of the river corridor by private boaters and commercial outfitters. We were instrumental in the huge gain of permits issued to private boaters per the Colorado River Mangement Plan, which was finalized in 2006. The allotment of private boaters is capped at 7052. Usage of this allotment has steadily increased over the years to 96 percent in 2020.
Discuss with the NPS the rules and regulations pertaining to the private boating community.
Work with the NPS to streamline the permit lottery process such as the rule applicable to the PATL portion of the permit application as well as the timeline for turning around cancellations.
Coordinate with other stakeholders to protect the resource that the river corridor provides. A few examples are working with others on issues such as the Escalade Project, Navajo docks permit, Hualapai tribal concerns, providing feedback to the USBR re the efficacy of the High Flow Experiment, etc.
Research the myriad of laws concerning current Park boundaries that affect the private boater’s experience of the river corridor.
Communicate with members via newsletters to keep our boating community apprised of issues as they arise.
