My 25 year old son and I are looking to join a Colorado or other river trip as boatmen or safety kayaker.
I have over 35 years experience rowing, paddle rafting, and kayaking. I’ve been fortunate to boat rivers from the Western U. S. and Alaska, to Asia and South America. My favorite river of them all is the Colorado, which I’ve done 28 wonderful times, including a couple of seasons commercially. I’ve done trips with groups new to the Canyon as well as experienced groups. My son has rowed his own raft down the Colorado as well.
I’m 62 years old, a retired college instructor, don’t smoke or do drugs, but I do like to have a beer after a hot day on the river. I’m fun loving, easy going, really like to hike, have been EMT, CPR and Swiftwater Rescue certified, like to make new friends and enjoy the camaraderie of others on the river and don’t mind doing groover duty. A number of years back I was a naturalist on the rim, helping people learn more about the natural, human and geologic history of the Canyon. I can help you pick the best campsites and hikes. Also, I’m familiar with the rapids at different flows and know how to pace a trip. If you are an experienced group, I can just smile and go with the flow.
I can safety kayak, row or paddle captain a rented boat or take my
own fully equipped 16 foot Avon Pro. It’s set up with the same frames as the commercial companies use, which means it will carry a ton of gear, is quick to load, has a large table and a giant ice chest. Gear wise, I’m pretty well set with a lot of the equipment that a group needs. I’m happy to help with trip preparations.Hope this info gives you a better picture of us and what we can add to your trip. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. It would be good to chat to get a sense of each other and meet up if possible.
Have a great trip (hopefully with me on it)!
Thanks,
Jerry Kauffman

Jerry, you sound like someone who would be a great fit for my private trip launching April 18, 2021. I have rafted and kayaked many rivers in the US including Alaska. This will be my second trip in GC. Im a little older than you and welcome all your experiance and the youthfull enthusiasm that son probably will bring. One of my main concerns with anyone joining our trip is their willingness to get-along and truily be part of the team. I’d like to pursue this further if my launch date works for you and/or son. I’m am considering a group size of 12 for 19 days and welcome your input. Roy Owens
